Long before Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon, it was Lanka β the legendary island kingdom of the mighty King Ravana, immortalised in Valmiki's epic poem, the Ramayana. Written over 2,500 years ago, this timeless epic tells of Prince Rama's quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from Ravana's island kingdom, aided by the devoted Hanuman and his mighty monkey army.
What makes Sri Lanka uniquely extraordinary is that the sites of the Ramayana are not merely legend here β they are living, breathing, sacred places woven into the landscape, revered by devotees and visited by pilgrims from across South Asia. From the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya where Sita was held captive in Ashok Vatika, to the ancient coastal temples where Rama prayed after his victory, the Ramayana Heritage Trail is an extraordinary 5-day private journey through mythology, spirituality, and the stunning natural beauty of Sri Lanka.
Nestled in the mist-kissed hills just outside Nuwara Eliya, the Seetha Amman Temple is the most emotionally resonant site on the entire trail. Believed to be the very spot where Sita was held captive by Ravana within the Ashok Vatika garden, the temple sits beside a sacred stream where Sita is said to have bathed β and on the riverbank boulders, the giant imprints of Hanuman's feet can be seen, marking the legendary moment he revealed himself to her.
One kilometre from the Seetha Amman Temple, the magnificent Hakgala Botanical Gardens are identified as the Ashok Vatika β the pleasure garden where Ravana held Sita captive after she refused to live in his palace. Today it is one of Sri Lanka's five great botanical gardens, but its mythological significance draws as many pilgrims as botanists. The locals even believe the soil here is dark because Hanuman burned the garden in a rage.
A short distance from the town centre, the Gayathri Peedam is believed to be the sacred spot where Meghanath β Ravana's mighty son β performed his penance to Lord Shiva, receiving supernatural powers in return. The temple houses numerous Swayambhu (self-created) Shiva Lingams and radiates a palpable spiritual energy that visitors describe as unlike anywhere else on the trail.
Perched dramatically on the Ramboda Pass along the KandyβNuwara Eliya highway, the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple is believed to mark the spot where Hanuman first set foot on Lanka during his search for Sita. Built by the Chinmaya Mission, the temple features a magnificent 16-foot statue of Lord Hanuman and commands sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding tea-covered hillsides β sacred and scenic in equal measure.
Divurumpola means "place of oath" in Sinhala. This ancient temple is believed to be the very site where Goddess Sita underwent the Agni Pariksha β the legendary fire test in which she walked through flames to prove her purity and fidelity to Lord Rama after her captivity. Coming through unscathed, she was reunited with Rama here. Even today, Sri Lankan locals take oaths and pledges of fidelity at this sacred site.
In the dramatic landscape around Ella, the Ravana Cave is believed to be one of several locations where King Ravana hid Sita during her captivity. A network of tunnels extends from the cave, said to be part of Ravana's ingenious underground city. Just below, the spectacular Ravana Ella Falls β one of the widest in Sri Lanka β is associated with Ravana's aerial chariot, the Pushpaka Vimana, said to have landed nearby.
One of the oldest and most sacred Shiva temples in Sri Lanka, Munneswaram (meaning "first temple of Lord Shiva") is where Lord Rama is believed to have stopped after his victorious battle against Ravana. Afflicted by Brahmaasthi Dosham (a karmic burden for killing a Brahmin), Rama prayed to Lord Shiva here for absolution, and installed a sacred Shiva Lingam. The temple predates the Ramayana itself and remains actively worshipped.
Located close to Munneswaram, the Manavari Temple holds one of only two Ramalingams β Shiva Lingams personally installed by Lord Rama β in the entire world (the other being in Rameshwaram, India). Lord Rama installed this lingam here as advised by Lord Shiva as an act of atonement. It is one of the most singularly sacred objects on the entire Ramayana Trail.
One of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, Kelaniya Temple is believed in Hindu tradition to be the very site where Vibheeshana β Ravana's noble brother who sided with Rama β was crowned as the new King of Lanka following Ravana's defeat. The temple's exquisite murals and golden dagoba also make it one of the most beautiful religious sites in the country.
One of the most extraordinary and unexpected sites on the trail, Ussangoda National Park's peculiarly barren red-earth plateau on the southern coast is believed to have been one of King Ravana's landing strips for his mythical flying craft, the Pushpaka Vimana. The unique landscape β where almost nothing grows on the red ochre soil β is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka, adding a haunting, otherworldly quality to its Ramayana legend.
Stand beside the legendary stone boulders at Sita Eliya where Hanuman's giant footprints are embedded β the very spot he revealed himself to Sita beside her sacred bathing stream.
Visit Divurumpola β the place where Sita walked through fire to prove her purity. A profoundly moving site where Sri Lankans still take oaths of fidelity to this day.
Touch the Shiva Lingam at Manavari Temple β one of only two Ramalingams personally installed by Lord Rama anywhere on earth, a site of immense spiritual significance.
Wander the misty, lush Hakgala Botanical Gardens β the very garden of the Ramayana where Sita awaited rescue, surrounded by Ravana's flora and the scent of mountain herbs.
Stand on the hauntingly barren red earth of Ussangoda β believed to be the landing strip for Ravana's legendary flying craft, the Pushpaka Vimana, on Sri Lanka's southern coast.
Marvel at Ravana Ella Falls near Ella β one of Sri Lanka's widest and most spectacular waterfalls, believed to be where Ravana's flying chariot descended from the skies.
Your private, air-conditioned vehicle departs from your Colombo hotel or Bandaranaike International Airport. Begin the sacred journey north along Sri Lanka's western coast towards the ancient Ramayana sites.
Your first stop is the magnificent Kelaniya Temple β believed in Hindu tradition to be the coronation site of Vibheeshana, Ravana's righteous brother, after Ravana's defeat. The golden dagoba and exquisite frescoes make this one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful religious sites.
Continue north to the ancient Chilaw coast. Visit the Manavari Temple β home to one of only two Ramalingams personally installed by Lord Rama on earth. Then proceed to the ancient Munneswaram Temple where Rama prayed to Lord Shiva for absolution after slaying Ravana, and the vimana hovered before he felt the karmic weight lift from his shoulders.
Drive east through Sri Lanka's cultural heartland towards Sigiriya. Check in to your hotel near the iconic Rock Fortress β itself a Ramayana-connected site β for dinner and an early rest.
Rise at dawn to climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress β believed in the Ramayana tradition to be one of the places where Ravana held Sita captive. The 5th-century palace ruins atop the 200-metre granite rock also make this a UNESCO World Heritage Site. View the legendary Sigiriya Maidens frescoes and the Mirror Wall as you ascend.
Begin the breathtaking highland drive south through Sri Lanka's tea country. The landscape changes dramatically as the road climbs into the cool, misty hills β emerald tea estates, cascading waterfalls, and mountain passes unfold around every bend.
Stop at the Ramboda Pass to visit the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple β the sacred spot where Hanuman first set foot on Lanka during his search for Sita. The 16-foot Hanuman statue stands watch over spectacular mountain views in every direction. Offer prayers and absorb the spiritual atmosphere of this hilltop sanctuary.
Arrive in the cool, misty "Little England" of Nuwara Eliya. Check in to your hotel. Enjoy a warm dinner in the crisp hill country air and rest in preparation for the trail's most significant day tomorrow.
Begin at sunrise with a visit to the Gayathri Peedam β the energy centre where Ravana's powerful son Meghanath performed his penance to Lord Shiva and received supernatural abilities. The morning silence here is profound, and the self-created Shiva Lingams radiate a remarkable spiritual presence. Dress modestly; this is an active place of worship.
The emotional heart of the entire Ramayana Trail. Stand beside the sacred stream where Sita bathed and prayed during her captivity. Touch the riverside boulders bearing Hanuman's legendary footprints. Offer prayers at the colorful shrines dedicated to Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The air here carries centuries of devotion and the scent of mountain herbs and incense.
Walk through the legendary Ashok Vatika β Hakgala Botanical Gardens β the garden paradise where Ravana held Sita captive beneath the sacred Ashoka trees. As you wander the fragrant pathways among orchids and roses in the cool mountain air, imagine Sita's months of longing and prayer within these very gardens, waiting for Rama.
Drive to Divurumpola β the Place of Oath β where Sita underwent the Agni Pariksha, walking through fire to prove her chastity and devotion to Rama. She emerged unscathed, and was reunited with her husband here. This site remains a place of solemn oaths and is one of the most moving stops on the entire trail.
Return to your Nuwara Eliya hotel as the highland mists roll in. Reflect on a day spent at the very heart of the Ramayana β three of its most sacred and moving sites, all within this extraordinary misty landscape.
Drive to the scenic town of Ella through the dramatic hill country. Visit the Ravana Cave at the base of a cliff near Ella town β believed to be one of the secret locations where King Ravana hid Sita. The cave system extends deep into the hillside, and the surrounding rock landscape adds an appropriately dramatic atmosphere.
Just minutes from the cave, the spectacular Ravana Ella Falls β one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka β crashes dramatically down the hillside. Associated with the landing of Ravana's Pushpaka Vimana flying chariot, the falls are both a mythological landmark and one of the most photogenic spots in the country.
Drive to the southern coast to visit the hauntingly unique Ussangoda National Park β a barren, wind-swept red-earth plateau believed to be one of King Ravana's landing strips for the Pushpaka Vimana. The peculiar landscape, where almost nothing grows on the rust-coloured soil amid dramatic ocean cliffs, creates one of the trail's most otherworldly and memorable moments.
Check in to a hotel along Sri Lanka's beautiful southern coast. Enjoy the warmth of the sea breeze after days in the cool highlands, and a fresh seafood dinner as the Indian Ocean shimmers at sunset.
Near Galle on the southern coast, Rumassala Hill is believed to be where a fragment of the Sanjeevani Mountain fell to earth β carried by Hanuman from the Himalayas to revive Lakshmana in battle, and accidentally dropped here. The hill's unusually rich and diverse flora is attributed to this legendary event. A serene and symbolic final Ramayana stop.
If time permits, take a short stroll through the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort β a beautiful colonial sea fort just minutes from Rumassala. Enjoy a final coffee or breakfast inside the fort walls overlooking the Indian Ocean before the return journey.
Your private vehicle begins the drive back to Colombo along the Southern Expressway. Comfortable, air-conditioned, and reflective β the perfect journey's end after 5 extraordinary days walking in the footsteps of the Ramayana across the island of Lanka.
Arrive at your Colombo hotel or Bandaranaike International Airport β spiritually enriched, deeply moved, and carrying the ancient stories of Lanka with you on your onward journey.
While the Ramayana portrays Ravana as the villain who abducted Sita, Sri Lankan tradition tells a far more nuanced story. In Sri Lanka, Ravana is remembered not as a demon but as one of the island's greatest kings β a scholar of immense intellect, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, a master of medicine and music, and the builder of an advanced ancient civilisation.
The Ramayana Heritage Trail in Sri Lanka honours both traditions β the Hindu devotional journey of Rama, Sita, and Hanuman, and the Sri Lankan reverence for Ravana as a complex, brilliant, and deeply human king whose legend permeates every hill, cave, and waterfall of this extraordinary island.
